Celebrating Nurses Week at Mountain View Hospice: Honoring Our Heroes in Scrubs
It’s that time of year again when we pause to recognize the superheroes in our midst—our nurses! At Mountain View Hospice, our nurses are the heart and soul of our care. We want to take a moment this Nurses Week to send a huge thank you to each and every one of them for their unwavering dedication, compassion, and incredible work they do for our patients and their families.
Hospice nursing isn’t your typical 9-to-5 gig. It's not about bandages, vitals, and quick fixes. Instead, it’s about offering comfort, dignity, and compassion at a crucial point in life. Hospice care is a tough field, and our nurses, led by the amazing Tammy (our Director of Clinical Services), dive in every day with hearts wide open. It’s a role that asks for everything you’ve got—emotionally, physically, and spiritually. But as our nurses will tell you, it’s also one of the most rewarding jobs you can have. You’re not just caring for a patient; you’re walking beside their families through some of life’s toughest moments.
A Little History Lesson
Nurses have been central to the care of the sick and dying for centuries. In fact, did you know that the first known "nurse" was Phoebe from the Bible? She’s thought to be one of the earliest references to someone performing compassionate care. Fast forward to the 1800s, and Florence Nightingale came along and revolutionized the profession. She not only improved the quality of care but also started the movement to improve hygiene practices in hospitals. That’s right—before Florence came along, hand-washing was a suggestion, not a rule!
Fast forward a few more decades, and in 1982, the Medicare Hospice Benefit was created, officially turning the focus of healthcare to comfort over cure. And while things have changed drastically since Phoebe and Florence, one thing has stayed the same—nurses, like the incredible team we have here at Mountain View Hospice, continue to provide that same caring spirit, offering comfort and support to people during their final stages of life.
We have to give a shout-out to the incredible nurses at Mountain View Hospice. Seriously, where would we be without them? Here's a quick look at a few of our shining stars:
Tammy – Our Director of Clinical Services, a true leader who ensures every patient gets the care they deserve. She’s the calm in the storm and the heart of the operation. We love her more than coffee... and that’s saying a lot.
Alison – Always bringing joy and smiles to even the toughest days, Alison knows how to make a stressful shift feel like a breeze. Her laugh is contagious, and we’re lucky to have her.
Clara– Clara, with her kind heart and steady hands, brings a special sense of peace to every family she cares for. We often joke that she could calm a storm with her gentle voice. If only she could calm our office phones, too. (But that’s another blog.)
Kristi – She’s the nurse who manages to show up every day with a positive attitude, even when it’s 4 a.m. and the coffee hasn’t kicked in yet. Kristi is the epitome of grace under pressure. If only we could bottle her energy and sell it, we’d make a fortune.
Danielle- Danielle has been with us the longest and is truly our Weekend Warrior! As a seasoned nurse, she brings her expertise and compassion every weekend without fail. Her dedication and nurturing spirit make her an invaluable part of the Mountain View Hospice team.
We could go on and on about our wonderful team—because every one of our nurses plays a vital role in making the work we do here so special.
But let’s get real for a second: hospice care is about more than just managing symptoms. It’s about connection. It's about offering a shoulder to lean on when everything else feels uncertain. It’s about sharing those quiet, tender moments with families when they need it the most. And it’s about being there, no matter how tough the day may get.
Our nurses are the ones who hold hands, share stories, laugh, cry, and—most importantly—offer comfort when it’s needed the most. They truly are the unsung heroes of healthcare. They get it. They understand that the most meaningful thing you can give someone at the end of their life is peace, comfort, and compassion.
So, here's to you, our Mountain View Hospice nurses. You’re the backbone of our team, and we couldn’t do it without you. You are the reason families are able to cherish their final moments with their loved ones. You are the calm in the storm, the comfort in the chaos, and the light in some very dark moments.
Happy Nurses Week, from the bottom of our hearts. We hope you know just how much you’re appreciated—not just this week, but every day.
